🦋 Building A Bio-Abundant New York
— Marielle Anzelone
New York’s next climate breakthrough relies on technology thousands of years old: nature itself. Wetlands buffer floods, urban forests cool neighborhoods, and soils store carbon. The NYC Biodiversity Task Force is pushing to recognize these ecosystem services as critical capital assets.
The city hosts globally rare species like Pumpkin Ash trees, Piping Plover shorebirds, and Monarch butterflies. American Eels migrate annually to the harbor from the Sargasso Sea. Yet New York remains the only global city without a biodiversity mandate. With the US absent from the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the city has both responsibility and opportunity to lead.
The Task Force envisions nature as central to how New York plans, budgets, and governs, leveraging ecological systems to improve public health, enhance wildlife habitat, and build climate resilience.
This June, the group released a report calling for action across agencies, neighborhoods, and institutions. The Task Force is urging the next mayor to make biodiversity a governing priority through five key initiatives:
Make Every Neighborhood More Parklike
Treat Nature as Essential Infrastructure
Connect Ecology to Public Health
Create Nature Education and Workforce Pipelines
Engage with the International Community
Supporters can advance this agenda by sharing the Task Force’s message, partnering on nature-based solutions, and pressing city leaders to value ecological systems as public assets – sign up here to learn more and get involved. The challenge isn’t just protecting nature, but also governing with it. By integrating biodiversity into urban systems, New York can lead the next wave of climate innovation.
