NY Climate Tech: Nov 14 - 21
Deep tech, sustainable leadership, fashion, ESG, climate PR, and equity storytelling... and that's just Tuesday
We’d love to learn more about you! Please take a couple minutes to fill out our community survey and help shape NY Climate Tech going into 2023.
Hi all,
Start the week off today with a talk on soil-bacteria derived fiber as part of NY Jewelry Week (so many weeks). Tuesday is jam-packed, with meetups for pretty much everyone. Love science and hard problems? SOSV’s Deep Tech NYC Happy Hour. Business leadership? SILC's Sustainability Professionals Networking. Marketing? The meetup Advertising and PR Pros with Clean Creatives. Storytelling and equity? An Evening of Storytelling with Next100. Fashion? Sustainable Fashion Community Center. Women in tech? Tech Up For Women Conference. ESG in Fortune 500s? American Innovation Conference.
On Wednesday, learn about offshore wind with COPRI and NYSERDA, the phenomenology of and metabolism of cities with the Urban Soils Institute, How to Have a Low Waste Holiday Season with Greeningfullife and the NYC Fair Trade Coalition, or hear from climate startups at Green Drinks Brooklyn. On Thursday, dial into Climatebase Live: Tech Careers in Climate to hear from and talk to six innovative climate companies that are actively hiring software and product roles, then head to the Consulate of Brazil to learn about green finance and agriculture opportunities. Wrap up the day at Barnard with a screening of WATERMARK and discussion with the filmmakers.
Hot Take: Work on Climate
Layoffs have come for big tech, with Amazon announcing today that it would join the growing list of companies letting go of thousands of employees. For those looking for work, at least one area remains strong: climate tech is hiring. On Friday, CTVC reported that climate venture funds still have $37b ready to deploy to grow the ecosystem. For entrepreneurs and startups in climate tech, the future is still bright. And they need your help!
This Thursday, Climatebase is running an online session on Tech Careers in Climate, featuring WeaveGrid (EV support), Patch (carbon API), SINAI Technologies (decarbonization), Regrow AG (farming), Form Energy (energy storage), and Aurora Solar (solar software). All six companies are actively hiring software, product, and design roles.
When many people think of climate jobs, they think they need a degree in the field or that the only opportunities are in policy or for energy engineers. That couldn’t be further from the truth: climate needs people from all backgrounds and encompasses all sectors: from food to fashion, from virtual power plants to real estate.
Want to explore on your own? Check out Sonam’s tweet thread for an incredible, inspiring list of companies hiring in climate right now and VCs with job boards. Working in climate is working on the future, from plastic-eating enzymes to transforming some of the world’s biggest industries.

Khajornsak’s most widely known work is “Amplituhedron: Bio-Melanin Fibre Synthesised from Soil Bacteria to Design Innovative Zero Waste Body Adornment”. The research investigated the use of soil to create a biomaterial in Thailand. Bio-fibre was synthesised from soil bacteria, and the design process holistically considered the entire production cycle, ensuring that it left no waste. The final material contained melanin pigments similar to human skin tones, and their hues were comparable to those of the target groups in Thailand. Apart from this, it aims to maximise the value of natural resources in response to climate change based on harmonious living with nature. The study significantly contributes to the literature because it represents the forefront of biotechnology in philosophical aesthetics.
