NY Climate Tech: May 20 - May 27
Food, Film, Port Authority Resiliency, Tom Steyer at the NYPL, a Climate Musical, Carbonauts, Science and Society, a performance on the Gowanus Canal, and more events this week!
Hi friends,
It was great to see so many of you at the NY Climate Tech meetups: from talking about the Climate Capital Stack with SVB to our regular meetup to an Saturday unconference (and those are just the ones we ran!), it’s always incredible to see just how vibrant NYC’s climate community is.
If you missed any of those events, we have one last one this month along with the Ceres Food Film Festival, the Climate Film Festival, and Rethink Food. Next Thursday, May 30th, join us at Rethink Food on Houston for 🎬 From Farm to Film: A Screening & Panel on Soil, Carbon, and Climate! This one is ticketed, but we’ll have Portuguese wines, upcycles bites, and a stellar panel.
In local news, things are heating up in Albany around the NY HEAT Act. The act removes subsidies for new gas hookups, saving utility rate payers from paying for gas expansion in new construction. The bill has passed the NY State Senate twice, but is stuck in limbo in the State Assembly, and there are only a little more time to get it through. Groups like Spring Street and pretty much every environmental advocacy group in NY State are trying to get it over the finish line. You can learn more about the bill in the NY Times.
Here are our picks for the week:
On Wednesday, head to midtown for 🌊 Climate Resiliency at the Port Authority of NY&NJ and then immediately after swing by the NYPL for 🌎 Tom Steyer with David Wallace-Wells on Winning the Climate War.
Feeling more off-Broadway? Also on Wednesday, swing by Judson Memorial Church at Washington Square for 🎶 Metra, a new climate musical in the works
On Thursday, pick between Williamsburg for 🍹 The Carbonauts Sustainability Mocktails and the UES for 👩🔬 Science, Society, and Sustainability - Closing the Knowledge-Action Gap at Germany’s 1014 5th Ave.
If you’re in town for the weekend, head to the Gowanus for 🛶 Unheard-of + The Gowanus Dredgers Present: Not in Fact Dead, an immersive performance on everybody’s favorite super fund site.
There are a ton of conferences happening this week, from Adapt and Carbon Unbound in our backyard to ARPA-E in Dallas, and many more in between. Are you interested in finding out about more big events in advance? Reply and let us know!
Finally, mark your calendars for our next 🗽 Climate Tech Demo Night with AWS, NYU, Streetlife Ventures on June 3rd for NY Tech Week.
As always, read on for the full list of events, a special offer from Renewables.org, and upcoming opportunities, and more!
Cheers,
Alec, Sonam, and the Climate Tech Cities Team
