Hi all,
This week kicks off tomorrow with a talk on sustainability in NYC buildings and Local Law 97, featuring Andreas Benzing from NY Passive House, Stephanie Margolis of NYC Climate Action Alliance, and John Opperman of the Earth Day Institute. On Wednesday, head over to Brooklyn for monthly climate drinks at the Estuary bar in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
On Thursday we have our May meetup, and it’s going to be a big one. We’re joining up with Diamond List for their launch party, sponsored by Collaborative Fund, CityLight VC, and WeWork Labs. We’ll be on the roof deck of WeWork’s Times Square space, and pizza and drinks will be provided. Hope to see you there!
Finally, wrap up the week with a trip to Green-Wood (which I just learned is written with a hyphen) to get a behind-the-scenes the cemetery as arboretum, with their director of horticulture, Joseph Charap.
Online, GreenHome NYC has two events on Wednesday: the first is a volunteer orientation, the second a nice pairing with Tuesday’s sustainable buildings event, with a deeper dive into passive homes and NYC.
Next week we’ll be kicking off a new phase of NY Climate Tech, with some new ideas to help build the community. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you: what are your favorite parts of the NY climate community? What do you wish there was more of? How can we help guide new people into climate, and how can we support better connections between those already in it and working here in the city? Send me your thoughts, or come find me at the meetup on Thursday. Looking forward to it.

🌆 Monthly Forum - Removing Barriers to Sustainable Urban Living
When: Wed, May 18 from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM EDT
As the populations of cities continue to grow, there is more pressure to increase housing stock and expand the transportation system to keep up with demand. While cities like New York City certainly have parts of the puzzle solved, there isn’t widespread implementation of best practices to make buildings and the neighborhoods in which they reside sustainable in an affordable, equitable way that checks off all the boxes.
By attending this forum, you will learn about:
How Passive House principles are essential to making buildings go green in both new construction and retrofits
