NY Climate Tech: April 26 - May 3
A very busy Tuesday, the Bloomberg Green Summit, CUNY Symposium, and an early peak at next month's meetup in collaboration with Diamond List
Hi all,
There’s a lot going on tonight! We’re hosting our next meetup at OCabanon in Chelsea, Young Energy Professionals has an Energy Trivia night, and Metropolis Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief is talking on green design. There’s even a Bloomberg event on circular design that didn’t make it in here, we all only have so much time.
Tomorrow is the Bloomberg Green Summit, in person and online, with a great list of speakers — check it out if you can. On Thursday and Friday, CUNY is hosting a symposium on climate change, ecosystems, and human health. It’s a hybrid event, so you can call in or show up in person.
Online is no less busy, with Understory and Gener8tor’s startup showcase today at noon, an Earth Day panel from Project Drawdown and a forum on flood resiliency in NYC on Wednesday, and an info session on getting into the solar workforce next Tuesday.
There’s a lot happening this week, so holding off on jobs, but they’ll be back next week! As always, please send over any events or listings you’d like to promote, I’m happy to include them.
Looking forward to seeing many of you tonight!

🌍 Historical and Climatic Perspectives on Persistent Drought in East Africa
When: Tue, April 26, 2022 at 5:45 PM
Where: Fayerweather Hall, Room 513, 1180 Amsterdam Avenue
RSVP: Free here
Historians and climate scientists are increasingly collaborating with each other. One goal is to better understand our past climate at a higher resolution at local or regional scales. While we know much about how the climate has changed over the course of human history at a global or hemispheric level, the complicated dynamics at regional and sub-regional levels means there is much still to learn and historical evidence can help by anchoring climate events in time. Another goal is to better understand history through our knowledge of the climate by bringing paleoclimatology into historical research, especially before the twentieth century. This event will present one approach to collaboration between a historian and paleoclimatologist that draws on evidence from lakes in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, from new high-resolution paleoclimatological products that offer annual reconstructions of the hydroclimate drawing on proxies, and from oral traditions societies in the region. The aim of this approach is to better understand multi-decadal droughts in East Africa in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. By combining these different kinds of evidence, despite the range of uncertainties each contains, it is possible to start to develop a more granular understanding of the droughts and of the range of human response to them.
