NY Climate Tech: April 18 - April 26
Our next meetup, Electrify Brooklyn Launch, Bio-Inspired Green Tech, and more!
Hi all,
It’s a busy week! Tomorrow we have our first April meetup. Originally we’d planned to have it at Collaborative Fund, but we’ve had to find a new location and will now be hosting it at Loreley Beer Garden in the LES. Swing by! We also have another meetup next week at OCabanon the night before Bloomberg’s Green Summit, if you can’t make this one.
Wednesday’s all about Kings County, with the Electrify Brooklyn Launch Party from Brooklyn Solar Works & Blocpower and monthly Green Drinks hosted by Estuary at ONE15 Brooklyn Marina. On Thursday, head to CUNY for a conference on Bio-Inspired Green Science and Technology during the day or stop by the Google Store in the evening to hear about their work on sustainability from the Head of Delve at Sidewalk Labs. Friday and Saturday have too many Earth Day events to even list here, have fun!
Finally, next Tuesday the 26th is another big day, with our *second* meetup, energy trivia & networking with YPE, a talk on climate change and interior design with the EIC of Metropolis magazine, and finally a more historic take on climate change in Africa at Columbia. And don’t forget to check out Bloomberg’s Green Summit the next day!

🌍 Historical and Climatic Perspectives on Persistent Drought in East Africa
When: Tue, April 26, 2022 at 5:45 PM
Where: Fayerweather Hall, Room 513, 1180 Amsterdam Avenue
RSVP: Free here
Historians and climate scientists are increasingly collaborating with each other. One goal is to better understand our past climate at a higher resolution at local or regional scales. While we know much about how the climate has changed over the course of human history at a global or hemispheric level, the complicated dynamics at regional and sub-regional levels means there is much still to learn and historical evidence can help by anchoring climate events in time. Another goal is to better understand history through our knowledge of the climate by bringing paleoclimatology into historical research, especially before the twentieth century. This event will present one approach to collaboration between a historian and paleoclimatologist that draws on evidence from lakes in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, from new high-resolution paleoclimatological products that offer annual reconstructions of the hydroclimate drawing on proxies, and from oral traditions societies in the region. The aim of this approach is to better understand multi-decadal droughts in East Africa in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. By combining these different kinds of evidence, despite the range of uncertainties each contains, it is possible to start to develop a more granular understanding of the droughts and of the range of human response to them.
