NY Climate Tech: April 17 - April 23
Our NYCT happy hour, sustainability in fashion, and a whopping 27 events to celebrate Earth Day!
Hi friends,
Join us this Thursday the April NY Climate Tech Meetup! This month we’ll be on the rooftop of Citizen M Hotel on the Bowery – they’ve reserved space for us and the weather should be perfect spring.
It’s Earth Day on Saturday, so naturally there’s a ton going on: scroll down for the full list of all 27 events this week! Here are a few of our picks:
Tuesday: dig into 🏙 Decarb for Office Buildings with Building Energy Exchange
Wednesday: head to 🍻 Green Drinks Brooklyn for networking and speakers
Thursday: join us for the first rooftop 🗽 NY Climate Tech Meetup of 2023
Friday: support the incredible students in the 🌍 Carbon Removal Challenge.
Sunday: dance your heart out at an 🎉 Earth Love block party by House of Yes
In other exciting news, Earth month has gotten us energized to create new event formats to best support the climate startup community in NYC. As such, we’re launching a new Climate Tech Pitch Night! We want to provide a platform for local entrepreneurs to practice pitching and receive feedback from a curated panel of experts. We know how important selling a story can be - and we want to help! Stay tuned for a final date and location in May, but if you’re interested in pitching your great idea, apply here!
To add to the magic, we’re also launching a few new platforms to support climate founders, funders, and career transitioners! There is no shortage of great companies raising money for their groundbreaking ideas, great investors looking to support with capital, and great talent living the mantra that every job is a climate job. We can’t wait to hear from you!
Cheers,
Alec, Sonam, and Kathy
Sustainability: Making the hottest fashion trend timeless
The resource-intensive fashion industry accounts for up to 10% of global carbon emissions annually, a trend which has been fueled by fast fashion–known for its affordability, cheap materials, and short production-to-landfill lifecycle.
To help achieve the ambitious global target of net-zero emissions by 2050, UN Climate Change launched the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action in 2018–a set of voluntary commitments with over 100+ signatories, including the world’s largest fashion retailers such as Adidas, H&M, and Gap Inc.
With more and more brands rushing to slap on a sustainable label or start an eco line, what does sustainable fashion actually mean? Complemented by broader climate action and policy (e.g. The “Fashion Act” introduced in NY State Senate), some of the main industrial levers of sustainability and circularity in fashion include:
Design & materials. Techniques include zero-waste design, using recycled materials, and using sustainable materials which require less water & energy in manufacturing.
Reselling & take-back programs. More clothing companies are offering consumers ways to recycle, sell, or exchange their old clothing, from REI to Balenciaga.
Innovation & knowledge hubs. Brands from Eileen Fisher to Gucci are investing in hubs to accelerate sustainable practices via investments, mentorships, knowledge sharing and/or and industry partnerships.
Sustainability reporting. Greater transparency around supply chain and social/environmental impacts are increasingly standard via voluntary reporting (e.g. H&M Group’s Sustainability Disclosure)
New Yorkers throw out about 200,000 tons of clothes and textiles each year, but there are a number of local initiatives to help make sustainable fashion more accessible to local designers and consumers alike:
NYC Clothing and Textile drop off. GrowNYC operates weekly clothing collections at greenmarkets throughout New York City, where residents can drop off clothing, shoes, and textiles for recycling or donation.
Thrift stores. Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Housing Works are just some of the many thrift stores around the city accepting clothing donations (more options here), though end-of-life impacts can be inconsistent.
Gem. Founded by NYC technologists, this app enables you to search dozens of second hand & vintage online stores all at once, with granular filters to find your perfect fit!
NYC Fair Trade Coalition. Grassroots organization in East Harlem hosting regular clothing swaps.
Fabscrap. Brooklyn-based non-profit helping to recycle excess materials from regional designers and brands.
ReFashion Week. NYC Sanitation’s event series showcasing upcycled fashion.

The CFF will launch its programming with several smaller events in late Fall 2023, leading up to a full festival slate in late Spring 2024, and volunteers will be an integral part of the festival’s creative founding team.
The Urban Future Prize Competition seeks entrepreneurs who are building startups that contribute to a more resilient and sustainable planet. Two prizes of $50K each will be awarded to two companies who embody the drive and mission needed to address the greatest challenge of our time.
NY Climate Tech and Streetlife Ventures are launching new platforms to support climate founders, funders, and career transitioners! There is no shortage of great companies raising money for their groundbreaking ideas, great investors looking to support with capital, and great talent living the mantra that every job is a climate job. Streetlife Ventures, co-founded by NY Climate Tech’s very own Sonam Velani, is excited to support these efforts across our community. We can’t wait to hear from you!

New York City's more than 100 year-old sewer system is not nearly enough to confront climate change. In order to address increasing extreme rainstorm events, storm surge, and sea level rise, the City will need to systematically change its approach at the individual and citywide scale to transform the City into one that can absorb extreme rainfall when we need it the most. The City's existing infrastructure, built environment, and competing needs makes adapting to climate change challenging and expensive. .
