NY Climate Tech: March 1 - March 8
Nord Stream 2, Architecture X Climate, and our meetup next week
Hi all,
This weeks’ events start on Thursday with a discussion on Nord Stream 2, Germany’s dependence on Russian gas, and what it means for both politics and the climate. The day after is James McWalter’s First Friday climate and tech meetup at Blue & Gold, a storied dive bar with Ukrainian heritage. Online, NYU Law’s Institute for Policy Integrity has a heavy-hitting list of speakers discussing distributed energy. Finally, kick off next week right with a Monday talk by climate scientist Gisela Winkler and architectural theorist Jorge-Otero Pailos at Columbia.
Next week is our March meetup at Torch & Crown Brewing Company in SoHo in collaboration with MCJ. We have 35+ people registered, RSVP here and come say hi! I’m also pulling together a climate dinner series: if you’re interested, sign up with this form. If you’ve already signed up, expect an email from me soon.
We have three featured jobs this week. NYT is looking for a Lead Sustainability Editor for (recently unionized) Wirecutter, filling a much needed niche. Macy’s is hiring a VP of Sustainability to help with their supply chains and ESG initiatives. And finally, Uber is hiring a Product Marketing Manager to help promote their sustainability efforts.
Want something listed in a future newsletter? Just reply to this and I’ll add it in!

Amidst the ongoing crisis between Russia and the Ukraine, Germany’s energy dependence and Nord Stream 2 have been major topics of discussion – within Germany, across Europe, and in the United States. The pipeline has been a controversial subject for years, but after Russia’s formal recognition of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, it has been put on ice by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The subsequent invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops changes everything. However, the current moment remains part of a longer narrative…
Please join 1014 and the American Council on Germany for a discussion which will put the pipeline project and Germany’s energy dependency in a broader context. Featuring Sascha Müller-Kraenner, Executive Director of Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V. (Environmental Action Germany), an independent non-profit organization which was founded in 1975 and is focused on environmental and consumer protection; and Dr. Steven E. Sokol, President of American Council on Germany (ACG).

The Climate School at Columbia University launched officially in fall 2021; this newest School at Columbia promises to form a hub of interdisciplinary research. Complex phenomena such as the climate crisis are so multidimensional that they need more than just a scientific or technological lens; instead the combined expertise of researchers in social and human behavior, culture, politics and policy, economics, communication, and other areas must be brought to bear. This series will showcase the work of leading scholars and Columbia researchers on climate, environment, sustainability and their social and cultural dimensions.
